The Lower Permian fossillagerstätte Bromacker in the Thuringian Forest near Gotha is well known for its diverse tetrapod fauna and well-preserved trackways. The locality is considered one of the first terrestrial vertebrate ecosystems world-wide and yields spectacular articulated fossils preserved in fine sandstones and shales.
The Foundation Friedenstein Castle/Museum of Nature Gotha and the Museum of Natural History Berlin currently run a large-scale excavation each year.
