Germany - Enspel

The Erdgeschichtliche Denkmalpflege (Department for the Conservation of Monuments of the Earths History) is running excavations in the upper Oligocene Enspel Pit (Westerwald Mountains), in the Middle of Germany. The site is well known for its fossil-rich black pelite which preserved among many other fossils the oldest gliding rodent of the world.

Every summer (well, not in 2013) the Erdgeschichtliche Denkmalpflege runs a dig for interested students. You get free accommodation next to the pit and get a salary of 500 Euro per month. You have to buy your food and cook for yourself.
